Waterways -Thinking About a New Direction
I've had a small series of paintings I'm ashamed to say I started.....last November.
The reason I've taken so long to finish them is because I've not only been busy with my other project, but I'm in transition with the Waterways Project. My very patient spouse drove all over the South Loop with me this last weekend looking for some grit to inspire me in my new direction. I'm enjoying inching my way along conceptually to a new direction.
You can see more images of the South Loophere on my blog.

these two pieces are wonderful. The one of the bridge with the broken up ice took my breath away
All of you at Watermarks have been awarded with the Sunshine Award for "Creativity and Positivity in Blogging" - please check award details here : http://www.creatingnaturejournals.com/2010/03/sunshine-award.html
Thank you all for being such an inspiration!!
Thanks Maureen and Pam. I feel like I'm more stumbling along at the moment but it's very nice to have the feed back.
Lindsay - I always feel like January and February are a very odd time of year for artists.
The time of year makes us think we ought to have a sense of renewal and yet the weather can conspire against us if we take our imspiration from the external world.
Well at least that's the way it's been affecting me this year!
I'm sure you'll be underway again in no time at all!
Thanks for saying so Katherine. Chicago is so gray right now, weather wise. I think I'm also feeling a bit over-saturated image wise. Here's to March and may she go out like a lamb.
I'm excited for you finding yourself on a new path...patience and tenacity! A beautiful piece by [you and an exciting promise of what is to come. Pretty soon you'l be floating around on your river again, full of energy and ideas!

The river is now uncovered...no ice and I'm starting to dream of canoing.
I know that feeling, Lindsay---wonder if it wouldn't help you, as it has helped me, to pull back your focus from the big picture (the big Waterways theme) to a component of that theme somehow--- the texture of water, the big shape connection of sky and water at the horizon, a concentration on shape and line of the manmade forms that appear in your South Loop photos (which are great!) I don't know what might appeal to you. A shift in point of view can be very helpful--- I know I'm finding it both helpful and energizing in this, my third year, of painting watery subjects. And since you have been working on the waterways theme for a while now, you, too, might benefit from a project that is one or two steps removed from your initial concept. Anyway, good luck to you.
Excellent advice Laura. Thanks for your perspective and I got an instant flash of "collage" when you said focus on "shapes" as a suggestion. Vivien has made some comments to me in the past about making my own collage papers.
